How much does SEO cost for a small business?
THE SHORT ANSWER
Most small businesses pay a few hundred to a few thousand dollars a month for SEO. In an Ahrefs survey of 439 SEO providers, the most common monthly retainer was $501 to $1,000. The price matters less than what it buys: count the pages written or improved each month, and ask what the report shows.
SEO for a small business usually costs between a few hundred and a few thousand dollars a month, and the most common agency retainer is $500 to $1,000. That range comes from an Ahrefs survey of 439 SEO providers, updated in August 2024. The more useful question is what the money buys. Two quotes at $800 can mean one new page a month or none. This guide gives you the ranges, the reasons they vary, and a checklist to compare quotes line by line.
What do SEO agencies charge a month?
Most SEO providers charge $2,000 a month or less, and the single most common agency retainer is $500 to $1,000. Those are the findings of the Ahrefs survey, which polled 439 agencies, consultants, and freelancers worldwide.
| What the survey found | Figure |
|---|---|
| Most common monthly retainer, all providers | $501 to $1,000 (20.4% of respondents) |
| Most common monthly retainer, agencies | $500 to $1,000 |
| Most common monthly retainer, consultants | $2,501 to $5,000 |
| Providers charging $2,000 a month or less | 68.8% |

Ahrefs also publishes averages near $3,000 a month. Read them with care: Ahrefs computed them from the top of each price band, which pushes them up. The most common range is the better guide to what a small business will be quoted.
Why do SEO prices vary so much?
SEO prices vary because "SEO" names very different amounts of work. One provider runs a monthly report and tweaks a few titles. Another researches, writes, and publishes new pages every week. Four things move the price:
- Output. How many pages are written or improved each month. This is the biggest driver, and the one quotes most often leave vague.
- Competition. A personal injury lawyer in a big city competes with firms spending heavily. A custom jeweler with a clear niche does not.
- Who does the work. A consultant, a freelancer, or an agency with account managers, strategists, writers, and developers. Every extra person in the chain is in the price.
- What is excluded. Link building, Google Business Profile management, a new site, or analytics setup are often billed separately.
What should a monthly SEO fee include?
A monthly SEO fee should buy visible work, a clear report, and a reason for every choice. Use this list to compare quotes:
- A number: how many pages are written, rewritten, or improved each month.
- Research you can see: which searches each page targets, and why those.
- Technical checks: titles, speed, mobile, structured data, crawlability.
- Publishing: who puts the page live, and who approves it first.
- A monthly report that says what was done, what changed, and what happens next.
- Terms: minimum commitment, notice period, and who owns the pages if you leave.
What does low-priced SEO usually leave out?
Low-priced SEO usually leaves out new content, and sometimes the truth. A package at a few hundred dollars a month often covers monitoring and small fixes, which can be useful, but rarely a new researched page every week. Walk away from any offer that guarantees rankings: nobody controls Google or the AI assistants, and a guarantee usually hides risky tactics.
How long before SEO pays for itself?
SEO usually takes months, not weeks, to bring leads. Here is one real timeline, from Ring Mint, a custom engagement ring business that uses Louis's method: the site launched at the end of May 2026, Google started showing it in August, and the site received 22 inquiries between August 8 and September 26 (8 in August, 14 in September). One business is not a promise. It is a realistic order of magnitude: plan for three to six months before judging the results.
What does Louis charge, and why?
Louis charges by output, with public prices and no minimum term. You start with the one-time offer that matches where you are: Build ($4,000, from nothing), Rebuild ($3,500, rework everything), Refresh ($2,500, a facelift), or Audit ($1,500, content machine only). Then Core costs $595 a month for 4 search assets, and Continuous costs $1,195 a month for 8, plus up to 4 optimizations of existing pages. A search asset is a new page or a deep refresh, whichever the data says deserves it.
| Researched pages a month | Freelance writing alone (estimate) | Louis, everything included | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core | 4 | $2,000 to $3,600 | $595 |
| Continuous | 8 | $4,000 to $7,200 | $1,195 |
Estimate: 2,000-word pages at 25 to 45 cents per word, the median US freelance rate range for blog posts in the Editorial Freelancers Association 2026 rate chart. Louis's price also covers research, SEO, publishing, reporting, and weekly monitoring.
Louis can charge this because an AI does the research, drafting, and checking that an agency staffs with people. Two humans still approve every page. Louis is not for you if you want 30 throwaway articles a month, or a service that publishes without your approval. See the full pricing, or see Ring Mint's first four months.
Frequently asked questions
Is $600 a month enough for SEO?
It can be, if the fee buys real output. $600 sits inside the most common agency range in the Ahrefs survey ($501 to $1,000). Ask how many pages will be written or improved each month; if the answer is vague, the price is not the problem.
Should I pay a setup fee?
A one-time fee is fair when it pays for real work: an audit, research, positioning, or a site build. It is not fair when it pays for onboarding calls. Ask for the list of deliverables behind it.
Can I stop paying and keep the results?
You should be able to. Pages you paid for should stay yours. With Louis you keep your site and every page, and you can cancel with 30 days’ notice.
Does SEO pricing include Google Business Profile work?
Often, for local agencies. Louis does not manage Google Business Profiles; the client keeps control of the profile, and Louis focuses on the website and the pages people and AI assistants read.
